Egypt is stated to be the country which trades most with Turkey in Africa

Economic Relations between African Countries and Turkey which have gradually become important in terms of global trade have been on a significant rise in last 5 years. Whereas total export to continent countries exceeds $36 billion, foreign trade volume reached $93.8 billion. Number of African Tourists visiting Turkey doubled and reached 885 thousand 877 between the years 2011 and 2015. Turkish contractors have undertaken 1 202 projects amounting to $58 billion in the continent.

Economic Relations between African Countries and Turkey which have gradually become important in terms of global trade have been on a significant rise in last 5 years. Whereas total export to continent countries exceeds $36 billion, foreign trade volume reached $93.8 billion. Number of African Tourists visiting Turkey doubled and reached 885 thousand 877 between the years 2011 and 2015. Turkish contractors have undertaken 1 202 projects amounting to $58 billion in the continent.

 

Total Exports of Turkey to African Countries increased 20,5% in 2015 as compared with 2011 and reached $12 billion 449 million in spite of the developments in Libya and Egypt as affected by the period called as Arab Spring. Total export in last 5 years was $64 billion 40 million. Imports dropped to $5 billion 99 million by 29% in this period as from last year, total imports in 5 years were calculated to be $29 billion 757 million. Total foreign trade volume reached $93 billion 797 million.

 

Whereas North African countries are at the forefront in foreign trade, Egypt has become the most importing country with $16 billion 61 million in last 5 years. This country is followed by Algeria with $9 billion 192 million, Libya with $9 billion 120 million, Morocco with $5 billion 874 million and Tunisia with $4 billion 225 million.

 

As for import business Egypt stood out as the most exporting African country with $7 billion 3 million. It was followed by the Republic of South Africa with $6 billion 832 million, Algeria with $4 billion 451 million, Morocco with $3 billion 925 million and Tunisia with $4 billion 225 million.

 

Turkey sells iron and steel products and purchases energy

Considering foreign trade in terms of sections, prominent industry is iron-steel industry in the export business with African countries. Total exports of iron and steel products and products made of them amounts to $12 billion 925 million. Whereas Energy is recorded as the most important product group, foreign acquisition in this field has amounted to $8 billion 258 million in last five years.

 

–Construction projects amounting to $58 billion in 44 years

Besides merchandise trade Africa falls within the most significant markets for Turkish contractors. Turkish contractors are known to have landed 1 202 projects in the African market; 978 in North Africa and 224 in Sub-Saharan Africa since 1971, when they undertook the construction of the port of Tripoli in Libya. The total cost of these projects exceeded more than $58 billion. Africa represents some 17.6 percent of all projects taken up by Turkish contractors abroad. Libya leads the way with the highest number of projects undertaken by Turkish contractors, followed by Algeria, Morocco, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Sudan and Cameroon. Between 2000 and 2016, Turkish builders also secured various mega projects in different African capitals, including works on international airports, rail transport systems, mass housing projects, energy transmission lines and industrial facilities.

 

- Number of tourists doubled

Number of African tourists visiting Turkey has increased considerably between 2011 and 2015 in parallel with the rise in merchandise trade and contracting services. Accordingly whereas 445 thousand 487 African tourists visited Turkey in 2011, it has doubled and reached   885 thousand 887 as from the end of last year. Considering visitors by their nationalities while Libyan tourists ranked first last year with 234 thousand 762, it was followed by Algerian and Moroccan Tourists respectively with 171 thousand 873 and 109 thousand 775.

Turkey’s exports to Egypt: $2.7 billion

Primary export products: Petroleum oils, iron-steel, motor vehicles, plastic and plastic products.

Turkey’s imports from Egypt:  $1.4 billion

Primary import products: Plastic and plastic products, products in chemical industry, gold and textile products

Trade volume: $4.1 billion

Trade balance: $1.2 billion
