     Esteemed President, the Turkish commercial life witnesses signifi cant developments with each passing day. Within this context what can you say about the Turkish commercial life and the future? Our economy is modernizing together with the increasing global integration. The form of competition is changing. Previous competition was limited to our own province and district whereas now the whole world can be a competitor.

     But at the same time the whole world has become an accessible market. The rapid changes in informatics and logistics technologies have made this possible.

     Both countries as well as companies are more interactive with each other than ever before. In this environment refl exes must be faster than ever. A perspective cannot stay limited to only the local but must extend 360 degrees. We are obliged to keep moving, be proactive.

    The mental codes of our companies are changing. We understand the importance and benefi ts of becoming a brand. We are among the fi rst three countries in Europe in terms of brand registration.

    We do not only focus on production for the internal markets but have an eye for the foreign markets as well. This is why we are able to export to more than 210.

     Our companies which learned to export by selling goods to brokers have now settled into foreign markets. The Turkish private sector currently has invested over 25 billion dollars abroad. Our contractors have major investments, machine parks in the whole surrounding geography.

     Would you like to share your expectations for 2014 by assessing 2013 in terms of Turkey? The expectations of the business world are more positive. If we assume that the improvement of the global economic environment will continue, that the petroleum prices will maintain their present level and that the political tension in neighboring countries does not increase from the current status we expect 2014 to be a better year than 2013

     On the other hand the prominence of the political agenda with the elections may cause the economy to remain in the background and postpone the expected structural reforms.

    We can turn 2014 into an opportunity. Our economy which recovered rapidly after the global crisis has closed the gap with Europe a bit more. However the other developed countries following us are closing on us by growing at least in parallel with us and even more than us.

     Now they will slow down for a while and in the meantime the stagnation in developed countries will come to an end. If we can increase and maintain our tempo we will get the opportunity to carry our position in the world league further. But there is some homework to be done in order to exploit this opportunity. We need companies which have achieved success in the global economy and made it permanent.

     The structural transformation need of our industry in particular is evident by the increasing ratio of medium technology products within our exports and the decreasing ratio of exported products requiring high technology.

    What do you think were the developments which stamped their mark on the commercial and industrial life of Turkey especially in 2013? When we look at the overall situation in the world what is waiting for us on a global basis in 2014? In Turkey the wheels of the economy have accelerated anew. The measures which were taken when it was observed that the fragility caused by the foreign defi cit which had reached record levels had acquired unsustainable dimensions had slowed the economy down in 2012. Thus for the fi rst time the current defi cit was decreased not after a crisis but with the applied economy policy. However both commerce and investments slowed down.

     Due to the solid macro fundamentals in the economy the confi dence of the business world rose again. The recovery of the European economies which are our largest export market also had a positive impact. Thus as of the second half of the year the growth of the economy accelerated.

     In 2013 the global crisis reached its third and probably its last phase. After the USA and Europe it affected the developing countries in Asia. In the economy of the USA which was its starting point there stronger signs of revival are observed.

    As a result of this the Central Bank of the USA is planning to end the expansionary money policy which has been applied for 5 years. Whereas the dispersed political structures and different priorities of European countries delay the implementation of rapid steps and recovery takes longer.

     Still, seeing the fi rst fi gures indicating economic growth in the Euro area after two years has been a positive development.

     Overall the expectations in the world are positive, an increase in trade volume is forecast. The acceleration of the developed market economies will be refl ected positively in terms of exports and investments.

     Can you assess the noteworthy export activities of the Turkish economy which has become a production base and particularly the export fi gures for the recent years for us? After the crisis in 2001 our exporters have been the main contributors in achieving an annual average growth of 6 percent. Today we have the strongest industry in the area between Italy and India. One third of the industrial products exports from a large area including North Africa, the Middle East, the Balkans and Central Asia are from Turkey.

     Due to the dynamism of our private sector the export structure of Turkey has changed and a transition from exporting predominantly agricultural products to exporting groups of goods with a high added value, high grade, high quality which are highly competitive has taken place.

     The fact that a large part of our exports are made to the EU and the USA which are the most developed and competitive markets in the world is an indicator attesting to the quality of our industrial production. We have achieved qualitative development and market diversifi cation in export.

     In the last 10 years the total export of medium and high quality technological products has reached 45 percent from 24 percent. The number of countries we export more than $ 1 billion worth of good to increased from 12 to 35 while the number of products increased from 9 to 27.

     What are the tasks of our companies in line with the export targets of Turkey? What steps should our companies take in this regard? A more positive picture is expected to emerge in the world in general and particularly in the European economies which are our main export markets in 2014.

     On the other hand the fact that fi nancing opportunities of European countries are limited and the rising costs of holding stocks will ensure that the buyers in Europe prefer our country because of its close proximity to the European market.

     In addition the fact that production in our country is of good quality, fast and fl exible is a strong point for us. We should use this to diversify the market and focus more on the markets of East Asia where we are not so strong.

     On entering new markets the insurance mechanisms must be used to minimize risks. Derivative markets are still not used suffi ciently.

     We should look for ways to benefi t more from these markets to counter the fl uctuations in the foreign currency markets.
