  • “World SME Forum Comes With An Ambitious Agenda” (8 Ocak 2016)

Emphasizing how TOBB supported World SME Forum in this respect, Yorgancõlar said SMEs meet almost 82% of registered employment in Turkey.

Yorgancõlar indicated that SMEs are represented at a very low level within international governance institutions, adding “One of the reasons for foundation of World SME Forum was to establish an organization to act on behalf of SMEs. We are honored that Turkey provides such contribution during its G20 and B20 Presidency.” LIFTVISION

-"We have to support development of SMEs altogether"

Tunç Uyanõk, WSF CEO, also touched upon the importance of growth of SMEs, stating “we have to support development of SMEs altogether in global terms.”

John Danilovich, the General Secretary of International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), provided information about ICC activities, indicating certain challenges in face of growth of SMEs in both developing and developed economies. Danilovich pointed out the importance of ensuring access of SMEs to international markets and providing them with proper competitiveness, adding "We should especially improve managerial skills and make sure they are well informed about regulations and have access to Þ nancing.” Stating it becomes gradually more difÞ cult for SMEs to have access to cost-effective Þ nancing through commercial banks, Danilovich said “A fall of 2 trillion $ is in question in trade Þ nancing. We found out that 50% of Þ nancing applications by SMEs are rejected by banks. This is an alarming trend.”

-"We aim at ending extreme poverty by 2030"

Klaus Tilmes, the Director for Trade and Competitiveness Global Practice at World Bank, indicated that World Bank seeks ending extreme poverty by 2030, and the institution has committed itself to collaboration with governments for this purpose. Tilmes pointed out the importance of SMEs for employment in current economic conjuncture, reporting SMEs provides two thirds of global employment. Stating that 600 million new positions are required until 2027 for participation of youth in labor, Tilmes asserts this will be possible only in case SMEs can realize their entire potential. Tilmes emphasized the necessity to support entrepreneurship, create values via skill development and to ensure integration of SMEs to global economy, adding that World SME Forum was established in line with these objectives.

-Session: Road Map for Global Governance

Muhtar Kent, Coca-Cola Company Chairman and CEO and Chairman of International Business Advisory Council (IBAC), talked at “Road Map for Global Governance” session. Kent said IBAC is established for the Þ rst time under presidency of Turkey, adding that 6 workgroups within B20 provided G20 leaders with advises in 4 titles. Kent told the Þ rst advise to G20 leaders was employment, laying stress on employment of youth and women. Kent remarked on low rate of participation among women in some countries, insisting on the need for well planned efforts in order to enhance this rate. Kent informed their second advice was to improve trade, saying “Unemployment is higher than ever, commodity prices are lower than ever, interest rates are lower than, and investments are on the decline. This is a really poor picture. Entire world will watch the decisions to be taken in G20 summits. In November, the world will keep an eye on Antalya. From then on, the decisions should be successfully applied.” Kent related the third advices on infrastructure investments, saying that the deÞ cit should be rapidly met through investments. At this point, the economic cycle should be well studied at G20, Kent said. Fourth advice was about “facilitation of access by small and medium enterprises to Þ nancing.” “A political leadership is needed for implementation of these recommendations,” added Kent. –

"G20 failed in avoiding new crises"

Alexander Shokhin, President of the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs (RSPP), indicated that member states of G20 made commitments on many issues and found an agreement on some others. According to Shokhin, the commitments and agreements will greatly contribute to national income all around the world. On the other hand, Shokhin underlined certain challenges and risks before G20, saying “Above all, G20 failed in avoiding new crises. For example, the European debt crisis. For sure, the solutions to such problems should be found at interregional level; nevertheless, G20 has to focus on emerging problems.” Shokhin also pointed out the busy agenda of G20. Indicating that some issues linger on G20 agenda for years, Shokhin said the following: “IMF reform, for example, is yet to be completed. Since 2009, the leaders made commitments at each summit, but the reform could not be accomplished. Neither are protective measures.” Stating the different levels of urgency for various matters on G20 agenda, Shokhin insisted on the consolidation of them.
